Do I need a planning or building permit?
Planning and building permits are different.
A planning permit is a legal document that gives permission for use, development or subdivision of land. Depending on the Ballarat Planning Scheme, a planning permit may be required for:
- land use
- advertising signs
- removing trees
A building permit relates to the method of construction to ensure your project is safe and meets building regulations. A building permit will be required for most commercial, industrial and residential development. Building permits can be obtained from a private building surveyor.
Before construction or activity can start, a proposed development may require a planning permit, building permit or both.
