Registering a domestic animal business

What is a domestic animal business?

Under current legislation, all domestic animal businesses must be registered with the City of Ballarat.

Domestic animal businesses include:

  • animal pounds operated by the City of Ballarat or a City of Ballarat contractor
  • breeding businesses (cats and/or dogs)
  • training for dogs and cats
  • pet shops
  • animal (welfare) shelters
  • dog/cat rearing/breeding premises.

How do I register my domestic animal business?

If you are looking to open a new business in one of the categories listed above, please fill out an application form. Your facilities must be inspected before approval of registration is given.

Businesses already registered with us will be sent a renewal form in early March. These need to be renewed by 10 April each year.

There are also audit inspections which are completed each year.

How much does it cost to register?

The annual fee to register your domestic animal business with the City of Ballarat is $265.
