Hard waste
The City of Ballarat does not have a hard waste collection service.
Food waste and compost
No, food scraps can’t be put into the green waste bin in Ballarat. You can place your food scraps in your home compost bin or your rubbish bin.Our green waste contractor is not able to process food waste. This means that any food waste in the green waste bin is considered a contamination.
Electronic waste
Electronic waste, or eWaste, is any item with a plug, battery or power cord. eWaste includes items such as mobile phones, TV’s, laptops, computers, computer accessories, whitegoods and battery operated toys.
Your Green waste bin
Green bins are collected fortnightly on the opposite week to recycling. The maximum weight for collection is 70kg. If the bins are heavier, they cannot be collected. If you really struggle to wheel it to your kerbside, then it is too heavy for the arm of our truck. Green waste can also be taken to the Transfer Station. Please note: Our green waste collection service is compulsory for residential properties between 250m2 and 4000m2 with a detached h...

Your general waste bin
The contents of your rubbish bin go directly to our landfill in Smythesdale. Taking rubbish to landfill is the least preferred way to get rid of rubbish in Australia. The City of Ballarat is here to help reduce how much waste is going to landfill. Your rubbish bin should only have household waste that cannot be recycled through your yellow or green lid bins, or other recycling options such as Pass on Glass drop off sites or the Transfer Sta...

From waste to wellbeing
The City of Ballarat’s Waste to Wellbeing program is working to empower the Ballarat community and businesses to improve social and economic wellbeing; using activities like reselling, reusing, sharing, repairing and composting to keep and create value from our waste. A range of Ballarat initiatives and businesses are transitioning to a circular economy where the primary focus is on reuse, repair, and repurposing rather than throwing was...
Reducing landfill waste in Ballarat
Ballarat residents are being encouraged to do their part to divert waste from landfill and to learn more about where waste and recycled material from the City of Ballarat goes. Managing waste is one of the biggest issues facing society today. The City of Ballarat is proactively working to sustainably address the issue of waste through strategies such as the Pass on Glass system and the development of a Materials Recovery Facility ...
Don’t dump your DIY junk
Don’t put DIY project waste in your yellow recycling bin. Contamination in our recycling bins is usually around 16% but is now at 20% to 25%, with a lot of this including DIY project waste.
