Enhancing Sebastopol's Victoria and Albert Streets

Delivering a greener, safer and more accessible Sebastopol precinct for residents and visitors has taken the next step, with tenders now released for the construction of the streetscape project.  

The works will take place from the north of Birdwood Avenue to Ophir Street.  

The Sebastopol community viewed the concept designs in July last year and provided valuable feedback in order to finalise the designs ready for construction.  

Residents, traders and visitors to the area provided invaluable insights into how the improvements would benefit the area and what could be changed.  

Community members stressed the importance of pedestrian connections, outdoor dining and seating, landscaping, and beautification of the area, as well as safety for cyclists.  

The plans now include details such as:

• Accessibility and pedestrian works at the Albert Street and Victoria Street roundabout.  
• New paving and seating areas outside local businesses.  
• Accessible car parking.  
• Dedicated crossing for shared user paths.  
• Trees such as Angophoras, Maples and Yellow Gums to be planted along Albert, Victoria and Bridge Streets.  
• Installation of garden beds, including the planting of Callistemon, Grevillea and Westringia as well as Lomandra, Poa and Dianella species.  

The $924,000 Streetscape Project is being delivered thanks to a State Government funding commitment, from the $5 million Spotlight on Sebastopol project.  

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Des Hudson said it is great to have the locals’ feedback on how to improve the precinct.  

“This is an important project for the area of Sebastopol, that will enhance the already bustling area for visitors and locals alike and make it an even more inviting place to shop and visit,” he said.  

“The works are not expected to impact businesses or roads, with majority of the construction happening on road shoulders and footpaths, allowing people to continue to go about their daily business in Sebastopol.”
