Ballarat residents are being urged to tap into their distinct pride for the city they call home and invite their favourite people to visit as part of a new campaign aimed at boosting tourism numbers.

Following a series of lockdowns due to the pandemic, the City of Ballarat’s visiting friends and relatives campaign will encourage residents to reunite with their friends and family in Ballarat and share the best the city has to offer when it comes to local businesses and experiences.

The visiting friends and relatives market is a significant part of Ballarat’s visitor economy, accounting for 45 per cent of tourism visitation over the past five years.

Ballarat is Victoria’s largest inland city and is a melting pot of art, culture, food, wine, attractions and modern events set against an iconic heritage backdrop.

In 2020, Ballarat was dubbed the most liveable regional city which is testament to the maturation of the city to a vibrant centre, with great hospitality offerings and a wide range of attractions set among a stunning natural environment.

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Daniel Moloney said Ballarat’s unique selling proposition is the fusion of cultural and creative experiences set among contemporary heritage, and he encouraged locals to extend the invitation to family and friends.

“Take them to your favourite café, or to a new spot you’ve been meaning to try,” he said.

“Head to one of our incredible attractions or head to the lake and get paddling on the new boats. Because everything we love to do is better when we experience it with our favourite people.

“The tourism industry is one of the hardest hit, so ensuring we continue to support them is essential to maintaining a thriving visitor economy.”
