North Gardens Wetlands

The following statement is in response to questions from WIN News regarding litter in North Gardens.

The City of Ballarat works continuously alongside organisations such as the Department of Environment, Land, Water, and Planning and BADGAR Wildlife Rescue to ensure the ongoing safety of all wildlife around Lake Wendouree.

The North Gardens wetlands are a constructed storm water drainage feature the purpose of which is to remove rubbish, litter, petrochemicals and fine sediments from the drainage water that enters Lake Wendouree from the north west urban area of Wendouree.  The litter in the pools shows that the wetlands is doing its job in improving the water quality of Lake Wendouree and down-stream into the Yarrowee River.

The litter is most noticeable after heavy rain fall which flushes the litter from streets and drain pipes. Once the water flow subsides our Lake Wendouree maintenance team collect what litter they can from the ponds.

Bins are brought in to dispose of rubbish generated at events held in the North Gardens, including markets.

It is unfortunate that wildlife can be affected by waste products that are discarded and not recycled or disposed of appropriately. A change in social attitude is required to improve this behaviour.
