Library re-development moves a step closer

Ballarat City Council has appointed Studio Hollenstein for the design development phase of the Ballarat Library – a project that is set to change the way the city’s library service operates and to provide a blueprint for future builds.
Studio Hollenstein bring a significant library design and large project delivery experience to the design phase of the $6.99 million re-development of the central library.
City of Ballarat Deputy Mayor, Cr Amy Johnson said importantly, the Sydney-based company plans to use local contractors, including well-respected Ballarat architect Nathan Porter from Porter Architects in their subconsultant team and for design and delivery phases, and Cardno TGM Ballarat as sub-consultant engineers.
“This is a significant point of difference to the other considered submissions particularly the use of a local sub consultant architect and engineers in the current COVID environment - having local consultants who can access the site,” she said.
Council awarded an additional $4.59 million to the original library re-development budget in April 2021 to include significant works to upgrade mechanical equipment, electrical systems, fire systems a roof replacement and lift upgrade.
The increased budget required the detailed design and construction phase to be re-tendered, with applicants advised to use the original approved concept designs as a basis for their submissions.
Works to upgrade the library will be undertaken throughout 2022 with the newly refurbished library completed in 2023.
