View Point, subject to further review and support of concept.

Project DescriptionTop of document.

This project proposes a ‘pop up’ beach on a section of the Lake Wendouree Foreshore near View Point. The concept reflects upon the Lakes 19th century history when swimming was encouraged at the Lake.

The sand covered foreshore will provide a mock beach atmosphere in a landscaped setting of lawns and shade trees complete with beach umbrellas, deck chairs and lifesavers. It will run for approximately 4-8 weeks each year and help to activate the foreshore during summer which is traditionally a quiet time of the year for the Lake.

Project BenefitsTop of document.

The urban beach has the capacity to:

  • Encourage residents to stay in Ballarat and attract visitors to stay longer in Ballarat and to stay in Ballarat during the summer months.
  • Provide an opportunity for swimming in a less formalised environment, something that may be particularly attractive to families and youth during school holidays.
  • Help to activate and add vibrancy to Lake Wendouree and bring business to precinct during the quieter mid-summer months.

Project FinancialsTop of document.

This project is estimated to cost $120, 000 to initially establish. It will cost approximately $25,000 per 4 week period to provide lifeguards, staff and maintain.

The establishment costs will be reduced to approximately $60,000 a year after the first year.
