Did you know more than 10,000 people work in the CBD? Now that’s a lot of cars travelling into our city every day.
Following your feedback, we are changing parking in the CBD and residential fringe to ensure you have better flexibility when it comes to finding a car park.
Once we implement Smarter Parking in Ballarat’s CBD, you will:
- Be able to park for free for the first hour across Zone 1
- Have more options to pay for parking, including the use of a mobile phone app and new flexible payment options on parking meters
- Have access to free, time restricted and all-day parking around the CBD, hospital precinct and residential fringe
- Have flexibility to park in your own street with a residential parking permit in Zone 2
When can we expect to see changes?
If you’re a resident living in Zone 2 (the residential fringe) you can expect to receive a letter from us over the coming weeks outlining the proposed changes to parking in your street.
By the end of this Financial Year you can expect to see new parking signage installed across the entire Zone 2.
As a resident living in Zone 2, you are also eligible to apply for a Residential Parking Permit. This permit exempts you from any restrictions proposed for your street.

As for Zone 1, we will soon look to go to tender for new parking meters, licence plate recognition technology and a new parking app.
Stay tuned, we will have further updates for you soon.
