Works underway on major Eastwood Leisure Complex redevelopment

Construction has now commenced at 20 Eastwood Street for the redevelopment of the Eastwood Leisure Complex, a facility that has served the Ballarat community for more than 80 years.  

Federal Member for Ballarat, Catherine King and City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves have visited the site as demolition of the old facility gets underway.  

Cr Hargreaves described the commencement of construction as a significant milestone for the community.  

“The redevelopment of the Eastwood Leisure Complex is an exciting step forward for Ballarat,” she said.  

“Eastwood has long been a valued community space, and this investment will ensure the facility continues to meet the needs of our growing population for many years to come.”  

The $17.54 million project is supported by an $8.53 million contribution from the Australian Government through the Growing Regions Program.  

Member for Ballarat Catherine King said the redevelopment would give the beloved facility a new lease on life.   

“This $17.54 million upgrade in the heart of our city will support the many community groups who use Eastwood Leisure Complex, as well as supporting local jobs and the Ballarat economy.    

“Everyone in Ballarat has memories of Eastwood, and now locals will be able watch as it is transformed into a new fit for purpose community facility.”    

The redevelopment will deliver a modern and versatile community hub. Works include refurbishment of the existing basketball stadium and demolition of outdated buildings to make way for a contemporary facility featuring flexible meeting spaces, a medium-sized conference and community events space, multiple meeting rooms, three multipurpose activity rooms, and associated kitchen facilities.  

Community input has played a key role in shaping the project, with more than 250 people participating in engagement activities in 2023 to help inform the detailed design.  

Local Ballarat builder Nicholson Construction has been appointed to deliver the project, supporting local jobs and boosting investment in the regional economy.  

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2027.
