Mayor's Message - Friday 10 October 2025
One of the things I love most about Ballarat is the incredible people who make our city what it is. Every day, across our neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces and clubs, people are quietly giving their time, skills, and energy to make life better for others. They might not seek recognition, but our community wouldn’t be the same without them.
Now, we have the chance to say thank you and to truly celebrate those who make Ballarat such a special place.
Each year, the Ballarat Australia Day Community Awards give us that opportunity. Nominations are open now until 31 October for the 2026 Awards, and I strongly encourage everyone to get involved. These awards shine a light on the people and groups who lead with passion and go above and beyond to strengthen our community.
There are three award categories:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community Event of the Year
Each award recognises a different way people contribute to the life of our city. Whether it’s through volunteering, mentoring, fundraising, or organising events that bring us together, these contributions make a significant difference.
Maybe it’s your neighbour who always steps up to help, or a young person inspiring others through their leadership or creativity, or maybe it's an event that reminded you of what community really means.
Whoever comes to mind, I encourage you to take a few minutes to nominate them. It’s a simple gesture that says, “we see you, and we appreciate what you do.” Recognition like this not only honours individuals but strengthens the sense of connection that makes Ballarat a wonderful place to live, work, and visit.
To nominate someone go to Ballarat Australia Day Community Awards to download an application form or collect a hard copy in person from Customer Service at The Phoenix, 25 Armstrong Street South, Ballarat.
The awards will be presented at an official reception on 22 January 2026.
Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate what makes Ballarat truly special – our people. Because when we recognise those who give so much of themselves, we’re not just saying thank you; we’re helping build the kind of community we can all be proud of.
