Project overview

The Western Renewables Link is a proposed electricity transmission line, from Bulgana in western Victoria to Sydenham in Melbourne’s north-west.

AusNet, contracted by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), is developing and delivering the 190km Western Renewables Link.

Public Exhibition

Western Renewables Link Environment Effects Statement public exhibition 

The Environment Effects Statement (EES) and draft Planning Scheme Amendment (Amendment GC209) for the proposed Western Renewables Link are now available for viewing and public comment until 11.59pm on 22 August 2025.

In person: Printed copies of the EES can be viewed at the City of Ballarat's Customer Service area located in The Phoenix, 25 Armstrong Street South, Ballarat.

Please note: The display of EES documents at these Council facilities should not be taken as Council endorsement of the project. It is a statutory requirement that physical copies be available at public venues for those unable to access the EES online.  

Council Resolution

Council Resolution, 26 May 2021 (Page 18) 

That Council:  

  • Fully supports renewable energy and the need for its transmission into the electricity network;  
  • Advocates for the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project* Environmental Effects Statement process to properly consider underground methods of power transmission and use undergrounding wherever possible;  
  • Advocates for the transmission line route to use existing road, rail and electricity easements wherever possible.  

*Please note the name of the project has changed since this resolution and is now called the Western Renewables Link.
