First 72 Hours – Your emergency plan

The First 72 Hours circular graphic/logo

What would you do if you were in an emergency situation and couldn’t receive professional help for 72 hours?

The First 72 Hours prompts you to create an Emergency Plan for your business or household.

Building a safer and more resilient community is a shared responsibility across all Victorians, not just those in the Emergency Management sector.

Expect the Unexpected

Emergencies can be hard to predict and emergency services may be unable to reach you in a disaster.

What will you do for the first 72 hours if you had no access to power, water, gas, road access, communication services or limited food? What would you do if you knew that emergency responders or support services could not get to you, or if you could not get to them?

The City of Ballarat, in collaboration with the State Government of Victoria and Training X, is excited to bring you these amazing emergency preparedness workshops that will help you navigate developing a plan and addressing these issues and more.

Make an Emergency Plan

Download the Make an emergency plan worksheet and consider the following:

  • What Emergency Event is your plan for? Flood, fire, storm?
  • Who needs to be considered in your plan? Household members, neighbours, immediate family who live elsewhere? Pets or animals?
  • Who is your primary Emergency Contact that you can reach out to in an emergency situation?
  • Where will you go if you have to leave your home? Where do you get your information from? How do you verify that information?
  • Do you have any pets? What is your plan for them?
  • If you are leaving, how will you get there? Do you and all your family know the way, alternate routes if the way is blocked, do people know that’s the route you will take?

Back-up your Information

Information is critical in an emergency. Know what information to carry with you and have back-ups of:

  • Emergency Plans
  • Identification
  • Medical (including prescriptions), financial and insurance documents
  • Contact list – Friends, families, utility providers
  • Home inventory – photos of possessions, household assets, receipts or warranties

Prepare a Kit

Gather and store items ready to support you and your loved ones if you have to leave your home.

Consider if your emergency kit will include:

  • Food and water
  • Medication
  • First Aid Supplies
  • Radio
  • Batteries
  • Chargers and cables
  • Powerbank
  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen
  • Documents
  • Clothes
  • Money
  • Children’s needs – toys, bottles, etc.
  • Pet needs - attend a Pet First Aid event
