WATER ACTION PLAN

Purpose

The issue of long term water management for the City of Ballarat has been identified as the primary concern for the long term sustainability of the City.

The Water Campaign TM is an international program that assists local government to improve water management through reduced consumption and water quality improvement. In Australia the Program is delivered by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). The Action Plan is a requirement of the Water Campaign TM.

The City of Ballarat has set two water consumption reduction goals:

  1. Council will reduce its corporate water consumption by 40% based upon 1999/2000 levels by 2008
  2. a community goal of 20% reduction based upon 1999/2000 levels by 2008

The targets are ambitious but realistic given the current situation in relation to water resources within Ballarat.

Proposed action

The proposed actions are for the conservation of potable water and improvements in water quality and have been divided into four themes:
  1. Sustainable water use
  2. Education and awareness
  3. Policies and regulatory control
  4. Water quality
