DISPOSING OF CHEMICALS

What to do with old household chemicals

Household Chemicals

A permanent Detox Your Home site at Gillies Street Transfer Station accepts only:

  • paint
  • motor oil
  • car batteries
  • household batteries
  • fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent globes (CLF's)
  • BBQ gas cylinders up to 9kg (check with facility)

For all other chemicals, including unidentified chemicals, a mobile Detox Your Home collection is held at the Gillies Street Transfer Station approximately every 12 - 18 months.  A mobile collection was held in April 2010 and the date of the future collections for Ballarat and neighbouring towns will be posted here.

Materials are accepted free of charge and may include cleaners, solvents, pesticides, herbicides and unidentified chemicals.  A comprehensive list of what is accepted can be found here.

Detox Your Home services are for domestic quantities of chemicals only.

How to dispose of other chemicals safely
Old agricultural chemicals and non-household chemicals can be disposed of through the ChemClear program.  Register the chemical on ChemClear website or phone freecall 1800 008 182.  Once registered, you will be included in the next periodic collection.  Cost may apply depending on the chemical.

Materials are recycled or appropriately disposed of.  Disposing of these chemicals on private or public property or at landfill can be hazardous to human and environmental health.
