Sebastopol Library Community Hub


The project: The future Sebastopol Library will be a vibrant and interesting place for the whole community, welcoming people of all ages and all backgrounds. It will be a local hub for a variety of exciting cultural, learning and recreational programs.

Library Concept

Features of the new and improved Sebastopol Library:

  • Increased opening hours
  • Increased library floor space
  • Upgraded public toilet facilities located inside the building (current toilet facilities are located outside)
  • Meeting room space available out of hours
  • Upgraded technology room and facilities
  • Increased children’s collection and activity space located adjacent to children’s playground facility
  • Inclusion of a dedicated young adult space
  • More areas to sit and gather due to removal of small rooms and walls
  • New furniture and relocatable shelving on wheels
  • Out of hours returns chute directly into a dedicated sorting room
  • An additional rear accessible entrance adjacent to car parking space providing a safer option for library users to access the facility
  • Upgraded staff facilities

In 2016, an exciting new addition to the original project was approved, with a commitment made to deliver a Maternal and Child Health Centre, public meeting and activity space, and further landscaping and outdoor recreation space in the next three years.


The Commitment: The Sebastopol Library Redevelopment is funded by $600,000 from the City of Ballarat and $1.25 million from the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Program.

Project status: Designs are completed and the construction tender for the original library redevelopment has been released.

Completion date: Expected completion of the original redevelopment in late 2017.
