Ballarat City Council allocated $1.148 million in the City of Ballarat 2015/16 Budget to a significant redevelopment including new seating and new specially-designed carpet at Her Majesty’s Theatre. The redevelopment was a very popular project of the Budget Priority Projects Survey.

The new redevelopment is scheduled to commence following the final show of the 2015 Theatre season on 14 December 2015, and is expected to be completed prior to the staging of the first show of Her Majesty’s 2016 Season in late February 2016.

In addition to the seat removal, the redevelopment project includes the following works:

  • Install new seating in curved alignment to improve access, amenity and sight-lines
  • Realign foot warmers and reinstall to fit the new curved alignment of new seating
  • Redesign and replace the carpet in the Auditorium, foyer, long room, stairs and back of house areas
  • Carpentry works to Auditorium
  • Replacement of vinyl to Dress Circle and Balcony platforms
  • Repair and refurbish timber floor to Auditorium
  • Electrical works to replace aisle lighting
  • Painting
  • General maintenance work

New modern and wider seats will provide increased comfort and a contemporary theatre experience for patrons.

Expression of Interest Her Majesty’s Theatre Seating

Individuals, businesses and groups are invited to purchase the existing seats at Her Majesty’s Theatre seats.

To encourage all bidders, there is no minimum price for seats, with the community invited to pay their chosen value. All funds raised will be invested back into the future restoration and preservation of Her Majesty’s Theatre.

The existing seating at Her Majesty’s Ballarat was installed in the late 1930’s and was second hand at that time, repurposed from another site owned by Hoyts Cinemas. As part of the $6 million refurbishment in 1990, these seats were recovered and somewhat refurbished to extend their life until now.

The Expression of Interest process is open Monday 7 December 2015, and closes 5pm, Friday 8 January 2016.

The seats will be removed prior to Christmas 2015 and housed safely in storage. In early 2016, successful submitters will be contacted with a date range during which all seats must be collected.
