A criterium circuit is currently located in Victoria Park, however BSCC is investigating alternative locations and options for a stand-alone (eg not on road) facility, including a site in the North Gardens. The purpose of the project is to provide a regional facility which encourages and supports cycling, cycling education, and where children and adults can ride a bicycle safely and away from motorised vehicles.
The project concept aligns with the objectives of the Ballarat Bicycle Strategy (2014-2019). Project benefits include:
Provision a regional cycling criterium circuit and bicycle education facility in a safe and attractive environment.
Has the capacity to attract regional, state and national criterium events with the economic benefits that will bring to Ballarat.
Encourages cycling participation levels and encourage more active lifestyles and the health and wellbeing benefits of cycling.
Provides the opportunity to develop comprehensive cycling programs for school groups and youth and supports other user groups such as athletics and wheelchair athletics’ clubs and human powered vehicle groups etc.
The construction cost for the Criterium Circuit in the North Gardens is estimates to cost $1.5 million. Costs for the associated buildings and facilities have not been developed for this location at this preliminary stage of investigation.
