Recreation & Open Space Planning

The Recreation & Open Space Planning Unit delivers major recreational and open space development projects, strategy and services. The Unit aims to facilitate recreation and leisure opportunities and open space development that contribute to improved quality of life, enhanced community health and well-being and sustainable environments via four core functions:

  • Effective planning;
  • Policy development;
  • Project management; and
  • The establishment of strategic alliances.

The Recreation and Open Space Planning Unit is located at the Town Hall,Sturt Street, Ballarat and is responsible for planning and managing (in conjunction with an array of other Council Departments):

  • Almost 2.5% of the total geographic area of the City ofBallarat that is public open space;
  • 250 pieces of open space made up of around 1,700 hectares;
  • 39 sporting reserves comprising 55 playing fields and 4 baseball / softball diamonds;
  • 65 netball / tennis courts;
  • 1 equine facility;
  • 112 public playgrounds;
  • Over 40km of formal walking/cycling trails;
  • 6 aquatic facilities;
  • 12 youth activity nodes including skate parks and BMX jumps;
  • Liaison with over 320 recreation / community groups.
