Lake Wendouree and the Ballarat Botanical Gardens Special Committee of Council was formed in 1997, and its predecessor, Lake Wendouree Special Committee (formed in 1992), provides advice and makes recommendations to assist Ballarat City Council in its management of the region's most visited area.

Members bring a range of interests and expertise including commerce, environmental management and education, relevant sciences, community involvement, sport and recreation.

The committee meets monthly at the Robert Clark Centre. Presentations can be made by individuals, groups and interested commercial operators.
