Ballarat is basking in the glow of Winterlude success again, with the 2016 festival attracting thousands of visitors to our city.
Presented by the City of Ballarat and Visit Ballarat, the month-long festival captivated more than 100,000 visitors across its 50-plus events, with the pop-up ice skating rink, Sovereign Hill Winter Wonderlights, Winter at the Ballarat Wildlife Park and Seriously Shiraz amongst the major drawcards. Sovereign Hill welcomed more than 95,000 visitors to its Christmas in July Winter Wonderlights, making it the largest event in the outdoor museum’s 46-year history.
More than 14,900 locals and tourists laced up their skates and rolled around the Winterlude Pop-up Ice Rink. Uniquely positioned between the Town Hall and Myer this popular activity drew crowds to the CBD to skate but also to shop, eat and drink, increasing visitation to local Ballarat businesses. The Winterlude campaign started during the Victorian school holidays and continued through to the end of July with events including the Coopers Pie and Pale Competition, the Local and Live Laneway Festival and the Winterlude Beer Festival drawing a younger demographic from Ballarat, Melbourne and beyond.
