Adaptive Reuse of a Heritage Place - Winner

The Old Butchers Shop, 112 Seymour Street, Soldiers Hill

Owner: J. Bennett

The Old Butchers Shop was last used as a shop some 40 years ago now. Its owner has brought the shop back to life as a unique gallery/studio.  The owner has creatively utilised authentic elements such as using butchers hooks to hang paintings, retiling the facade in copies of the early black and white tiles (the pattern of which was sourced from old photos), recreated the butchers signage and installed a traditional butcher’s black and white blind. Although on a small scale this innovative re-use of a heritage place has engaged the local community by launching off their past: the innovative adaptive reuse of this building is nostalgic to its core.  It is extremely inspirational and has great potential to further spark a movement in Ballarat: bringing the community’s valued corner stores back to life by linking to local stories and Ballarat’s heritage.
