BALLARAT HERITAGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE


Many councils have a heritage advisory committee. In Ballarat, our committee has a wide role that covers education, promotion and management. The committee makes assessment and recommendations on heritage loans and other forms of assistance. This page explains the role of the Ballarat Heritage Advisory Committee and provides a link to its terms of reference and the organisations which are represented on the committee.

What is the Ballarat Heritage Advisory Committee?

The City of Ballarat has reviewed the role and function of the Heritage Advisory Committee to bring together key players in heritage management, promotion and education to assist Council.

The committee has been established in accordance with the Ballarat Heritage Advisory Committee - Terms Of Reference (PDF - 64KB).

The Committee consists of:

  • two councillors
  • two community representatives
  • ten (10) elected committee members, one from each of the following member organisations:

- Ballarat Historical Society
- Central Highlands Historical Association
- Department of Education & Early Childhood Development
- Department of Planning and Community Development
- National Trust of Victoria, Ballarat Branch
- Public Record Office Victoria
- Real Estate Institute of Victoria, Ballarat Division
- Sovereign Hill - Gold Museum
- University of Ballarat
- Wadawurrung Corporation

The role of the Ballarat Heritage Advisory Committee

The Committee’s primary function is to:

  1. Provide advice on marketing and promotion of the values of heritage and heritage related tourism within, and to, the City of Ballarat.

  2. Provide advice on best practice in the management and conservation of heritage and its applicability to the City of Ballarat.

  3. Provide heritage advice on specialist trade courses, events, community and school education material.

  4. Consider applications for loans and grants under the Ballarat Heritage Fund and to make recommendations on loans and grant applications to Council.

  5. Provide advice and recommendations on proposals related to heritage places, collections and objects when referred or brought to the Committee.

  6. Make recommendations to Council about further work required to document and protect Ballarat’s Heritage.

  7. Assist Council in sourcing external funding opportunities to further heritage conservation, promotion, management and education.

  8. Liaise with other interest groups and parties as required to fulfil the charter of the Committee.

  9. Provide advice and recommendations to Council on policy matters relating to heritage including but not limited to, the Ballarat Planning Scheme.

  10. Provide advice on recommendations for nominations of state, national or international significance.

  11. Provide an advocacy role for heritage matters within the City of Ballarat.
