STORMS AND SEVERE WEATHER
The term ‘Severe Weather’ encompasses many different aspects of our weather system and is generally used to describe significant weather occurrences which develop during strong thunderstorms. These events include:
- Strong wind gusts
- Hail storms
- Heavy rain
- Snow
- Lightning
- Thunderstorms
Storms can happen at anytime of the year and in any location. They may result in flash flooding, damaged powerlines and trees and un-roof building.
As with any potential emergency situation, preparation is key. The following is advice from the State Emergency Service Website:
- Develop a home or business emergency plan
- Assemble an emergency kit
- Clean your gutters, downpipes and drains and ensure they are in good order and not blocked
- Trim over hanging branches
- Make sure your roof is in good repair
- Tidy your yard and veranda to ensure unsecured items do not become potential missiles.
- The State Emergency Service (SES) assists residents with private damage during storm events. The SES can be contacted on 132 500. Please refer to their site for more information: www.ses.vic.gov.au
