Councillor Samantha McIntosh was elected to the mayoral position at the City of Ballarat in November 2016, in an unanimous vote by her Councillor colleagues.
She was first elected to Ballarat City Council in December 2008, representing the North Ward. Cr McIntosh was re-elected in the Central Ward in 2012 and 2016 and served as Deputy Mayor in 2012.
Mayor McIntosh has been a long standing advocate for Ballarat; her areas of particular interest have focused on the tourism, arts and events sectors. She is one of the city’s foremost advocates for protecting, enhancing and promoting Ballarat’s considerable built and social heritage and has been at the forefront of the City of Ballarat’s world-leading involvement in UNESCO’s Historic Urban landscape approach to heritage management.
Mayor McIntosh has set a list of personal priorities for her Mayoral term which include activating the Central Business District and enhancing elements of its historical character; delivery of a suite of community infrastructure; support for development of the Ballarat Station Precinct; progressing next steps on the agreed plan for the Civic Hall; and development of an Emergency Services hub at the Ballarat Airport Precinct, to include a major upgrade to the north-south runway.
Mayor McIntosh will also focus on job creation and increasing opportunities in the manufacturing and tourism sectors designed to bring significant local and regional benefits.
Cr McIntosh has trained as a registered nurse (MRN) and has owned and managed tourism hospitality and health support venues in Ballarat over the past 20 years. She also has experience in a leadership/management role at Ballarat’s St John of God Hospital.
Mayor McIntosh has resigned from her position as a successful Ballarat real estate agent to fully focus on fulfilling her Mayoral responsibilities. Cr McIntosh is married and has four adult children.
As the current Mayor, Cr McIntosh is a Destination and Economy Portfolio Councillor.
