The former Ballarat Fire Station has been added to the Victoria Heritage Register.

Located at 702 Sturt St, the building was added because of its historical and architectural significance to the state of Victoria.

City of Ballarat Councillor Samantha McIntosh said the building is believed to be the oldest fire station in Victoria.

“The station is one of very few remaining fire stations associated with the volunteer period of Victoria’s fire-fighting history”.

“This listing will ensure a high level of protection for the building. Any works not listed as exempt will now require a permit from Heritage Victoria meaning any works undertaken on the building will be respectful of its heritage qualities, retaining its significance and integrity”.

The former Ballarat Fire Station was constructed in 1860 to a design by noted Ballarat architect HR Caselli. The building was extended at the rear in 1890 and the bluestone walls were resurfaced in the 1930s.
