Works to commence on removal of former Eureka Centre mast

Thursday, October 27, 2011, 12:00 AM

Three cranes have arrived at Australian Centre for Democracy @Eureka (ACD@E) to commence work on the removal of the former Eureka Centre mast.

Works will commence from Thursday 27 October.

The removal of the mast, which held the Eureka banner and sat over the building, requires three cranes which will work through today and tomorrow.

The works will include the removal of the main support structure of the banner which will require the crane and machinery to operate from early in the morning to late in the afternoon or evening.

It is anticipated that works on site will begin at 6am Thursay and continue throughout the day until 6pm.

The cranes will continue to work during normal work hours on Friday before leaving the site.

The large pole from the mast will be retained on site to be re-used in a new flag pole structure.

The design of new flag pole will incorporate elements of the mast, such as its status as a marker for the site and way to display the Eureka Flag symbol.

The $11.1 million ACD@E project, funded by Ballarat City Council and State and Federal Governments, is scheduled for completion in mid-July, 2012.

The new Centre will provide state of the art interpretive and educational content and activities, as well as distinctive tourism linkages into the surrounding region.

In July, Ballarat City Council awarded the contract for the Stage Two redevelopment project to Ballarat company Nicholson Construction.
