Third Dredge for Lake Wendouree

Thursday, October 13, 2011, 3:25 PM

A third dredge will take to the water of Lake Wendouree today as work on the rowing course upgrade continues.

The dredge will begin work in the centre of the lake, complementing the progress being made by the other two dredges which are working from the start (eastern end) and finish (western end) of the rowing course.

The third dredge is similar in size to a second dredge which has been achieving about 30 metres a week since it began work in August.  The new dredge is expected to achieve similar progress.

Chair of Council’s Lake Wendouree and Gardens Advisory Committee, Cr Judy Verlin, said dredging contractors continued to work 12 hour days, five days a week to complete work on the rowing course.

“The second and third dredges use a cutting head specifically designed to work in a clay environment and our expectation is that work will be complete early in the New Year”, Cr Verlin said.

“The work will not impact on the Lake’s aquatic activities; we’ve seen a successful angling weekend, the return of yachting, and rowing crews training on an adjacent course until the dredging is complete”.
