Schools to mark 157th anniversary of Eureka

Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 12:00 AM

Local school students will participate in a special program to commemorate the 157th anniversary of the Eureka Rebellion this Friday.

This year’s event follows on from similar successful events conducted at the Eureka Centre since 2003. With the Eureka Centre currently closed for Stage 2 redevelopment works, this year’s event will be held at the Art Gallery of Ballarat., the Eureka Stockade Gardens and the Old Ballarat Cemetery.

More than 60 year five and six students from eight local schools will attend the morning’s activities. Participating students will have an opportunity to meet and work with students from other Ballarat schools.

The program will include a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony and other activities that will engage participating students and assist them in gaining a deeper understanding of the events, issues and outcomes associated with Eureka.

Saturday 3 December marks the official 157th anniversary of the Eureka Rebellion with a graves ceremony planned for the day.
