Members of the public are invited to celebrate the Australian Spirit at a raising of the Eureka Flag at Bakery Hill tomorrow.
City of Ballarat Mayor Craig Fletcher will join with St Alipius Primary School students to raise the flag in the lead up to the 157th anniversary of the Eureka Rebellion.
157 years ago on 29November (1854) at Bakery Hill the people of Ballarat gave birth to a strong belief in democracy and the rights and liberties of individuals.
More than 10,000 people gathered at a “Monster Meeting” at Bakery Hill to voice their right to have a say in how they were being governed.
They raised for the first time the Flag of the Southern Cross – the Eureka Flag.
Many burnt their mining licences in protest at excessive taxation and administrative corruption and they demanded political representation. This rife discontent on the Goldfields led to the tragic events of the Eureka Stockade in the early hours of December 3, 1854.
