Ballarat celebrates National Reconciliation Week

Wednesday, May 25, 2011, 4:20 PM

Ballarat Mayor Cr Craig Fletcher and renowned Indigenous photographer Wayne Quilliam will launch National Reconciliation Week at the Town Hall on Friday 27 May at 6pm.

May 27 marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in the nation’s history. The 1967 Referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.

Friday’s launch will feature a photographic display of images produced by Indigenous photographer Wayne Quilliam.  Wayne’s work in Indigenous Affairs in Australia and overseas has been recognised by dozens of international organisations with numerous awards including the NAIDOC Indigenous Artist of the Year, Human Rights Award, Walkely Awards and many art accolades.

A selection of his works will be projected onto the Town Hall between May 27 and June 3.

Ballarat Mayor Cr Craig Fletcher said National Reconciliation Week was the ideal time for people to join the reconciliation conversation.

“National Reconciliation Week should prompt us to think about how we can help turn around the disadvantage experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”.

Each year National Reconciliation Week (NRW) celebrates the rich culture and history of the First Australians. This year’s theme for NRW is ‘Let’s Talk Recognition!’

Council’s Koorie Engagement Action Group (KEAG) was formed in 2010 and has provided support to Council in recognising the Koorie community through the public launch.

The KEAG will launch Council’s updated Reconciliation Action Plan at the end of 2011.
