Lake Burrumbeet open to the public again

Water users will be able to access Lake Burrumbeet again after laboratory results of water samples show blue-green algae levels had lowered.

The lake was on closed on 22nd February 2011 after laboratory results of water samples confirmed the presence of four species of blue green algae (cyanobacteria) in concentrations that represented significant risks to recreational users, stock and pets.

Regular sampling carried out over the past month has shown a consistent decrease in the level of algal contamination.

City of Ballarat acting director Growth and Development Ian Rossiter said the water now posed only minimal risk to lake users and the lake could now be re-opened for recreational use.

“Council has today removed the warning signs and will continue to conduct weekly inspections and fortnightly water sampling for analysis until conditions make the re-colonisation unlikely,” Mr Rossiter said.

Any users should avoid contact with water that has a visible scum observed on the surface and report any sightings to Council’s customer service officers (5320 5500).

Council would like to acknowledge the cooperation provided by Central Highlands Water, the Burrumbeet Ski Boat Club and Burrumbeet Caravan Park in implementing the Blue Green Algae Incident Response Plan.

Blue green algae are naturally present in many water bodies, but can rapidly multiply under certain environmental conditions.

The opportunistic organisms can metabolise nutrients held in the water and some species produce substances that are toxic to humans, stock and pets.
