Public toilet improvements get the go ahead

Friday, June 10, 2011, 12:56 PM

Work will begin immediately on improving public toilet facilities in the city centre following a decision by Ballarat City Council on Wednesday night.

Council resolved to immediately undertake works on the Armstrong St facilities, commence obtaining permits for an accessible facility in the Town Hall, and to cost the viability of a shop front facility in Lydiard St for use by late night patrons in the entertainment precinct.

Councillor Samantha McIntosh said a range of consultations and studies were undertaken to understand the issues with the city’s CBD public toilets.

“Within the next financial year we will improve and update the existing facilities in Little Bridge St, work with Big W to improve their facilities and investigate options for a more user-friendly facility in Albert St”.

The priority list of recommendations is as follows:

  1. Investigate facility in Lydiard Street
  2. The provision of a fully accessible external facility for Town Hall
  3. Retrofit the existing Little Bridge Street facility to provide an enhanced accessible facility
  4. Demolish the Armstrong Street facilities and replace with a transportable/relocatable facility
  5. Undertake upgrade works to Albert Street and Big W facilities

The study and works form part of the City’s CBD Strategy that was adopted by Council in May 2010.
