Friday, July 01, 2011, 2:50 PM

Around 1000 little athletes will descend upon Ballarat on Sunday for the Little Athletics State Cross Country Championships.

The event will kick off at midday at the Buninyong Football Oval and Recreation Reserve and is one of four State Championships on the Little Athletics Victoria calendar.

Athletes aged six to 14 from the 102 Little Athletics centres across the state will compete.

City of Ballarat Councillors Samantha McIntosh and Ben Taylor will attend the event to present trophies to the winning athletes.

Cr McIntosh said she hoped to see members of the public come along and support the state’s budding athletes.

“It would be great to see our residents along on the day to support these aspiring athletes. Who knows – we might even find the next Steve Moneghetti!”

Residents should note that the following road closures will apply in Buninyong on the day:

  • Cornish St from Palmerston St to Eyre St
  • Palmerston St from Cornish St to Fisken St

Entry to the event is free.
