An investigation commissioned by the City of Ballarat on rainwater tank usage in the Ballarat region has found significant benefits.
Studies have found rainwater tanks connected to uses within buildings save considerable amounts of mains water have some benefits in flood mitigation and improve the quality of water entering storm water systems.
Councillor Noel Perry said the report shows that rainwater tanks are an important element of integrated water management strategies.
‘Tanks can reduce demands for potable water and at the same time reduce the flows and nutrients loads to receiving waters, providing some degree of flood attenuation and allowing water to be reused at the source.’
“I encourage Ballarat residents to get on board and consider installing rainwater tanks either at home or in businesses. They can be incorporated into both new development areas and also retro-fitted into existing areas during redevelopment and will produce great results for improving our water conservation.”
A permit may be required for installation.
