Tourism movers and shakers across the Ballarat region and broader Victoria are being called on to nominate for six positions on the new Ballarat Regional Tourism Board.

The new Board will lead tourism development in the Ballarat region and will shape the future of the industry going forward.

Ballarat Regional Tourism Director George Sossi said the new Board would be made up of individuals with the skills and drive to fast track Ballarat’s tourism development.

“Tourism is currently worth $409.3 million annually to Ballarat and supports 2,027 jobs and we would like to see continued growth. That’s why we’re seeking suitably qualified and experienced individuals to join with us.”

The Board will be a partnership between local government, Tourism Victoria and the tourism industry and will be responsible for the new industry lead Ballarat Regional Tourism organisation.

The establishment of the Board follows last month’s announcement by the City of Ballarat to incorporate Ballarat Regional Tourism Ltd.

Ballarat Regional Tourism Ltd will take over key tourism management responsibilities presently run by Council.

These include promotion of Ballarat and surrounds as a tourist destination; providing visitor information through the visitor information centre, and; developing and attracting tourism and business events.

Ballarat Regional Tourism will operate as a not-for-profit incorporated association governed by a voluntary, skills-based board.

Expression of interest information on the Board positions will be available from Saturday 19 February 20111 via www.ballarat.vic.gov.au through the Public Notices section.
