Keep Cool this Summer

While famous nation-wide for its cold winters, Ballarat gets its fair share of hot summer days and residents and visitors are encouraged to take appropriate care in days of extreme heat.

HEATWAVE

Heatwave is perhaps the most under-rated natural hazard.  Every summer, people suffer from heat stress when the body absorbs more heat that it can dispel and it is a serious physical illness.

The City of Ballarat encourages residents and visitors to watch the weather forecast and take appropriate care in the event of hot weather.  Suggested precautions include:

  • Keep animals in the shade with plenty of water
  • Check on older, sick and frail relatives, friends and neighbours who may need assistance in hot weather
  • Block out the sun indoors during the day by closing curtains and blinds, and open up windows and doors when there is a cool breeze
  • Do not leave children and pets in parked vehicles

To reduce the risks of heatstroke, take the following preventative steps and treatments:

  • Maintain hydration by drinking plenty of water and fluids and avoiding alcohol and sugary/fizzy drinks that may increase dehydration
  • Keep the body cool by applying damp towels, taking cool showers, wearing appropriate clothing and avoiding strenuous activity
  • Stay indoors and out of the heat
  • Spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned buildings (e.g. shopping centres, galleries and museums)
  • If you go outside, stay in the shade and drink plenty of water
  • If you suffer a chronic illness or feel ill, visit a doctor
