Lake weed harvesting hits high gear

Tuesday, August 02, 2011, 11:52 AM

Lake weed harvesting on Lake Wendouree has been kicked into high gear with four weed cutting vessels now on the water.

All vessels have now received the necessary licenses from Marine Safety Victoria and have been instructed by the City of Ballarat on where to deposit the harvested lake weed.

City of Ballarat Mayor Craig Fletcher said the harvesting vessels would all be using GPS technology and overlapping cutting by one meter to ensure nothing is missed.

“I’ve seen the GPS technology at work and it’s great. It gives us a lot of confidence in the whole process and we’re certainly well on track to seeing the lake completely cleared of weeds before the start of the spring aquatic season”.

One contractor will harvest the area between the north shore and the reed beds while the other will be cutting the remaining western and southern zones of the lake.

Harvested lake weed has proved very popular on local gardens and is available for collection by the public at Gillies Street, Victoria Park, opposite the Ballarat transfer station.
