Lake Esmond retaining wall to be replaced

Friday, August 19, 2011, 9:48 AM

Work has commenced this week to replace 140 metres of retaining wall at Lake Esmond.

The existing walls have reached the end of their lifespan and will be replaced with walls of sturdier construction. The new wall will be constructed from timber and steel rather than just hardwood.

The works are valued at $35,000, funded through Council’s Parks Development capital program, and are expected to be completed by the end of next week.

City of Ballarat Councillor Ben Taylor said Council was currently looking to form a Friends of Lake Esmond group.

“The wall is a great outcome as it has been a concern of the users of the area for some time. The replacement will provide a better environment and highlight the importance of the lake to the recreational areas of Ballarat”.

“We’re looking forward to getting a Friends group up and running for Lake Esmond and hope to be able to work with interested residents on these types of projects into the future”.

“A Friends of Lake Esmond group would assist Council in enhancing the precinct and responding to concerns around inappropriate use and damage within the reserve”.

The idea for a Friends of Lake Esmond group first arose in May after concerns were raised with Council over vandalism and loutish behaviour at the lake.

An information session for residents interested in joining a Friends of Lake Esmond group is being held on Wednesday 31 August at 5pm at the Canadian Lead Primary School.

The input of the Ballarat community is invited and encouraged. To find out more or to register your interest contact Council’s Community Development Project Worker Paula Roozenburg on 5320 5804 or email paularoozenburg@ballarat.vic.gov.au
