Further works to complete the extension of the foreshore of Lake Wendouree have commenced this week.
The completed foreshore extension, on the south side of Lake Wendouree at the Olympic Rings end, will provide additional recreational areas adjacent to the lake once completed.
The extended area allows for enhanced spectator viewing of aquatic activities on the lake. In particular it offers a superior view of the finishing line during rowing events.
City of Ballarat Portfolio Councillor for Growth and Development Judy Verlin said the completion of the Lake Wendouree foreshore improvement is another step in the complete rejuvenation of Lake Wendouree.
“With water back in the Lake, once the dredging project is complete we will be able to welcome back major aquatic events with our national standard rowing course.
“The foreshore works at the Olympic Rings end of the lake have offered extended viewing access for the thousands of spectators who will wish to view these events.”
Ballarat Rowing Association President Eric Waller said the completion of the Lake Wendouree foreshore works was a welcome outcome for the rowing community.
“The foreshore extension project is part of the agreed plan to create an amphitheatre style area at the south end of the rowing precinct.
“The area will not only enhance viewing access but enable us to attract and host first class events.”
The first stage of the project involved material excavated by deepening the rowing course being deposited in the nearby foreshore extensions. This round of works will involve the completion of the final height of the areas now that reclaimed material has completed settling and compaction.
Use of this area will be restricted for a short period of time. New lawn will be sown as soon as possible, subject to weather conditions.
The project is expected to be complete late April.
