Contaminated Loads

Many residents think they're doing the right thing by placing their recycling into a plastic bag before it goes into the bin. This is not the case! Materials in plastic bags cannot be processed safely and is therefore treated as contamination; ultimately, contamination costs the community both environmentally and economically as the material goes to landfill. All recyclable materials as noted above are to be placed individually in your recycle bin and not in shopping bags. Some items can contaminate the recycling process, causing whole loads of recyclables to go to landfill. If in doubt Leave it out! Dangerous items can cause health and safety problems for workers at the Materials Recycling Facility. To dispose of your greenwaste material responsibly, see also the 'Greenwaste' section from the Waste & Recycling main menu.

Bin placement for collection

Your bin will be emptied into the recycle truck using a side-operating mechanical arm, therefore, correct placement of your bin on collection day is necessary as follows:
  • have the handle and wheels of the bin facing your house, and the opening of the bin facing the road
  • place the bin half a metre apart from the garbage bin
  • do not place the bin behind parked cars or near trees or other obstructions
  • do not overfill your bin or place anything on top of your bin
Have the bins correctly placed by 6.00am on collection days.

Are you moving house?

When moving house do not take the bin with you. Each bin has a serial number which has been recorded against the property.
