A revised Waste Management Policy has been prepared to address waste management and minimisation issues. The plan examines Council's current services, identifies aspects of the service that may require change, and reviews options to determine the most appropriate course of action in an environment where climate change and the adoption of sustainable practices such as resource reduction and the environmental impacts of consumerism must be carefully assessed and managed.
As a result of the reviewed policy, changes may be required to better meet the community's needs and expectations. The policy will enable Council to be prepared for the challenges and opportunities that are expected, such as population growth and future development, new recovery practices and management technologies.
Key Waste Management Areas
The policy addresses:
- the operation and development of the Smythesdale Landfill
- the Gillies Street Transfer Station
- waste and recycling collection services
- recycle processing
- street cleaning
- litter prevention and illegal dumping
- education
The policy also highlights the need to further examine the provision of services including:
- green waste
- hard waste
- commercial recycling collections
