Community Development

Overview

The role, boundaries and expectation of local government is constantly changing. Councils are increasingly being recognised as the key interface between people and government, with Council carrying out many more initiatives than the traditional roads, rates and rubbish.

Community development umbrellas a number of activities undertaken by Council. These activities include:

  • Community Planning: understanding and preparing for the development of communities and addressing their social, as well as physical needs
  • Community Development Projects: working directly with peopole in neighbourhoods, and specific target groups to improve social outcomes
  • Health Promotion Projects: including overseeing the Council's Health Plan and other initiatives designed to improve the health status of local people
  • Community Safety: working with people and organisations outside Council to help improve the safety of City residents
  • Policy development: on local social issues including things like gaming, multi-culturalsim, reconciliation and volunteerism
Fostering a working relationship with local communities over a significant period of time has enabled specific projects to have a much greater level of community ownership and participation, both with involvement, but more importantly in the decision-making aspect of the process.
