Overview
The Arts and Cultural Development Strategy 2006-2010 was adopted by Council on the 14 December 2005. The Strategy outlines key directions Council will take during the next five years to enhance and nurture Ballarat's Arts and Cultural Communities and to support emerging and established artists in the region. The City of Ballarat has carefully considered all comments and contributions through an extensive consultation process involving individual artists and arts organisations for the creation of the strategy that will act as a framework for any future activity Council undertakes.
The key objectives for the coming years fall under eight broad headings:
- Getting Connected - Arts and cultural development in Ballarat is based on a coordinated approach. This maximises the benefits of collaboration between diverse practices and groups in and outside the region to build identity and belonging.
- Investing in Partnerships - Arts and cultural development in Ballarat is supported by responsive partnerships between Council, cultural institutions, community arts organisations and other key partners in and outside the region.
- Building Creative Capacity - Arts and cultural development activities in Ballarat are distinctive and known for their creative excellence, sustainable management practices, and innovative mobilisation of resources.
- Recognising our Creative Community - Ballarat values the qualities of imagination and innovation, proudly promotes its creative talent, and recognises the important contributions of arts and culture to a vibrant and strong community.
- Turning Spaces into Places - Ballarat is characterised by welcoming and safe, natural and built, public places, which are useable by residents and visitors. These places reflect historical and contemporary cultural experiences. They are guided by a co-ordinated approach to public art.
- Telling our Stories - Ballarat articulates its diverse cultural histories and draws on these to realise possibilities for the creation of new stories now and in the future.
- Making Art with, by and for the people - Ballarats arts and cultural activities are accessible and meaningful to its diverse communities. They encourage participation from all kinds of people within and outside the region.
- Recognising creative economy - Ballarat understands and enables the regional economic impacts of its arts and cultural activities, and encourages investment by and for cultural industries.
The Arts and Cultural Development Unit
The Arts and Cultural Development Unit at the City of Ballarat, forms part of Community Strengthening and Services section within the City of Wellbeing directorate.The team comprises of one full-time Arts and Cultural Development Coordinator and, also located in the council offices, a full-time Regional Arts Development Officer (RADO) for the Ballarat Region. The RADO is supported by the Ballarat Regional Cultural Partnership - a partnership between the City of Ballarat, Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative, Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council and Regional Arts Victoria.
