Blueprint Ballarat
Ballarat's rich and diverse history and cultural heritage is appreciated in Blueprint Ballarat - a document developed by the community to express Ballarat's vision for the future. As stated in Blueprint Ballarat "more than many Australian cities, Ballarat is a city where history matters, and it matters more than ever today because that history is such a potent reminder of what resilient, energetic, imaginative communities can achieve ... Ballarat now turns its attention to the challenges of the 21st century. Its history, ever-present in its buildings, streetscapes and gardens, is precious
because it provides the touchstone for contemporary challenges. Valuing Ballarat's history today is not an exercise in nostalgia and sentimentality. It is a call to fresh ambitions and daring, a challenge for today's community to realise the future it desires through concerted action, energetic self-reliance and clever ingenuity."
History and heritage are core to its vision that:
- In 2030 Ballarat will be a confident, outward-looking city, as proud of its heritage as it is ambitious for the prosperity and wellbeing of its people.
- It will regard its history as a precious repository of lessons on how to better meet contemporary challenges, acknowledging as central to that story the role of Ballarat's indigenous people, the lands traditional owners. Ballarat's cultural heritage will underpin a vibrant artistic life that enriches all sections of the community, expressing itself through galleries and festivals, visual and performance art and a lively entertainment precinct.
- Promoting itself as a Learning City, Ballarat will have created a culture of learning and training that offers everyone in the community opportunities to develop new skills and interests throughout life.
The diversity of the Blueprint Ballarat vision is reflected in the heritage information provided on this page. It address our built heritage, our heritage objects and collections, the tangible and intangible aspects of Ballarat's cultural identity and opportunities to learn about all aspects of heritage.
