The Adult Day Centre SAILS Program offers companionship and support to people with an intellectual disability, as well as a program of recreation and leisure that is sensitive to each person's need.
SAILS aims to provide individuals with a disability high quality, affordable recreation and leisure activities during the day. These activities aim to assist you to maintain and develop your needs, strengths, interests and choice. Emphasis is given to positive interaction with the wider community and full participation is encouraged.
The Centre
- is focussed on providing contact with the broader community through access to community facilities, activities and events
- is committed to maintaining an appropriate level of physical activity for clients
- works with other similar groups to broaden contacts and activities
- is funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services
- is auspiced by the City of Ballarat Aged & Disability Services Section.
The Centre Has
- well trained, caring staff who are committed to helping clients develop and attain their personal goals
- two 12 seater buses, enabling frequent excursions and easy access to local destinations
- large activity rooms
- a well equipped kitchen
- large out-door areas, including a barbecue, to make the most of the fine weather.
Once accepted into the program, there is no cost to the client. The exception is when the facilities or services of other service providers are accessed.
Lunch and morning and afternoon tea is provided for (and sometimes prepared by) clients.
The Centre's SAILS Program is designed to provide a wide range of topical, interesting activities that exercise the mind, body and social skills of clients.

- Share skills, hobbies, knowledge and memories
- Try new venues for meals
- Enjoy outings / short day trips
- Activities to enhance health and well-being.
Programs are based on individual choice in consultation with you and your family/carer/advocates. All individual and group programs conducted in SAILS are a direct consequence of peoples request and choice. Recreation and leisure plans are reviewed annually to ensure that we continue to meet the needs and preferences of each person.
Who can use the Day Programs
Any person with a disability, whose name is on the waiting list at the Grampians Region of the Department of Human Services is eligible to apply to attend day programs with SAILS.
Successful entry is dependent on the availability of vacancies and the ability of resources to meet the interests, needs and wishes of the applicant. You and/or your family/carer are welcome to arrange a visit to see what our service can offer. A person can also negotiate to spend some time in our day services to assist them to become familiar with what is offered in day programs.
Staff
Our staff are trained to assist and support you with your needs to enable you to participate.
The Centre's objectives include
- to assess individual needs and plan a program to meet those needs so as to enhance independence
- to provide activities and an environment which will ensure that participants feel comfortable and valued
- to provide a range of enjoyable opportunities for experiencing and developing social skills
- to provide respite and support for carers
- to meet or exceed the National Standards for Disability Services to ensure a safe, secure and healthy environment for service provision.
Fees
No attendance fee applies, however any extra costs for special activities to be met by you on the day.
Hours of Operation
SAILS operates 46 weeks per yera. Included in the 46 weeks are 10 public holidays, and 3 staff/program development days. Hours are from 9am - 3pm Monday to Friday.
